EE TV much better then YouView (from BT)...

EE TV much better then YouView (from BT)

Read (28 april 2015):
"(...)
If the former happened then it’s not clear what would happen to EE TV, which is essentially a rival to connected TV platform YouView, which is what BT TV is based on.

==> That said, EE has been making good on its word to quickly bring apps to its TV service - it got BBC Connected Red Button mere months after launch, a feat which had taken YouView nearly two years to get working.

EE TV customers can now also get the full range of content from Now TV on their boxes. Now TV, Sky's streaming service lets non-Sky TV customers stream shows like Game of Thrones, Mad Men and Penny Dreadful with an Entertainment Pass (£6.99/month) live Premier League football with a Sports Pass (£10.99/week) or the latest blockbusters with Sky Movies (£9.99/month).

Currently, you can only get Now TV Movies passes working on YouView boxes.

That said, we're still waiting on EE to add things like Netflix and ITV Player not to mention improvements to its native Restart and Replay features.  (...)"

"(...) EE continued to extend the reach of its 4G mobile network during the first three months of the year.

At the end of Q1 2015, EE's super-fast mobile services were accessible to 87 per cent of the population - over 55 million people. (...)

Overall, EE now has 9.3 million 4G customers in the UK, with another 1.7 million signing up between January and March this year.

===> The firm says it is "firmly on-track" to reach its target of 14 million 4G customers by the end of the year. (...)"

  2. . BT talks up TV synergies with EE

    By Nick Wood, Total Telecom
    Tuesday 28 April 2015

"(...) BT ended 2014 with 1.1 million TV customers, up by 134,000 compared to a year ago. EE does not break out its TV customers, but in its Q1 financial report on Monday, the company attributed its best ever quarter for fixed broadband net additions to EE TV. EE ended March with 884,000 fixed broadband customers, up from 834,000 at the end of December 2014.

"We can learn a lot from what they (EE) have done…especially around the integration with mobile," Green said.

However, it is ==> too early to discuss how EE TV will be integrated into BT, he said.

"The acquisition hasn't even gone through yet," he said.(...)"

EE TV: which bits should BT keep?

"(...) BT would be foolish not to embrace the features that make the EE TV service an attractive proposition – particularly those that appeal to a more mobile-savvy generation."

    --- ---- ----
"(...) While BT’s YouView offering is undoubtedly more established, and offer far more on-demand content, there are several features of EE’s TV service that BT should consider retaining if the acquisition is approved.

Firstly, EE TV has a 1 terabyte hard drive, which is enough to store up to 600 hours of standard TV, or 300 hours of HD. This is double the size of the hard drive in BT’s YouView box, and allows users to record up to four channels at the same time.

Users can also set up their box to record the last 24 hours of content from their six favourite channels, giving them an extra day to watch any programmes that they may have missed. A feature called Replay means that, if they tune in halfway through a programme, they can skip back to the beginning.

Although this isn’t quite as all-encompassing as BT’s YouView solution, which offers up the catch-up versions of channels directly within the electronic programme guide, EE TV’s Replay is faster and slicker, as it plays straight from the hard drive so there is no need to boot up a separate app.

EE TV also supports up to three extra devices, such as smartphones and tablets, allowing users to watch different live and recorded programmes on up to four devices simultaneously. Household members can download the EE TV app onto their various devices, and then browse and watch programmes without interrupting what is on the TV.

The EE TV app (available on Android and iOS) also acts as a remote control for the EE TV box, allowing users to search and select programmes using the keyboard on their touchscreen device, rather than the fiddly letter grid on the main TV’s user interface.

There are limitations to the app – users can only watch EE TV content on their mobile devices when they’re at home, connected to the home WiFi. It is not a ‘remote’ viewing service in the same way as Sky Go or Virgin TV Anywhere, for example.

However, it offers more flexibility than the YouView app, which only allows YouView customers to record TV programmes onto their YouView set-top box, not watch them on their Apple iOS and Android devices.

While it seems likely that the acquisition of EE by BT would sound the death knell for EE TV, BT would be foolish not to embrace the features that make the service an attractive proposition – particularly those that appeal to a more mobile-savvy generation."
