LTE broadcast will transform TV (Netgem & Lantiq & Plugnsurf, OTT IPTV, broadcast telcos)

21 January, 2016

LTE broadcast will transform TV – results of a unique trial

.. Is it possible to use LTE to broadcast TV nationwide?

The answer is clearly yes, at reasonable cost, with high video quality and additional features that significantly enhance the TV experience. This has been proven in a world-first trial covering a large area. With LTE broadcast, also called eMBMS (evolved Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service), linear, traditional TV broadcasts can be extended to any kind of mobile device. It provides the flexibility to combine linear and non-linear TV, on-demand and interactive TV. Once the required enhancements to 3GPP standards for large scale implementation are in place, the joint future of broadcast and mobile broadband looks promising ...

... Mobile devices can feed TV screens

Beyond the proof of concept the trial revealed that mobile devices can easily serve as a set-top-box when casting content to a large TV set. This is supported by almost any smartphone, either via Wi-Fi or cabling. This leads to the conclusion that technological progress in TV distribution will not be as challenging as it is today when each new Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) release needs significant backing from device makers to support it in their set-top-boxes and TV sets. Smartphones have much shorter innovation-cycles and therefore will quickly provide support for any new standards. They also ensure that home TV sets can be kept up-to-date via a screencast connection to a smartphone. The smartphone can be turned into a mobile TV set, set-top-box and intelligent remote control of large TV sets all at the same time. ...

8 chaînes Premium (Paramount Channel, Disney Channel, Virgin Radio TV, Game One, BBC World News, Equidia Live & Life et BET)

Netgem created a all-in-one solution, hybrid architecture with Microsoft Azure

Increasing Agility, Saving Money, and Speeding Multi-Platform Development with the Cloud

"(...)

Benefits

By migrating infrastructure to Microsoft Azure, Netgem is saving time and money, increasing agility, and improving services.
Speeds Performance and Reduces Capital Expenditures
By switching to a pay-as-you-go model, Netgem avoids making unnecessary IT investments, easily keeps up with unpredictable demand, and provides uninterrupted services for customers. Crainic explains, “Now that we’re using Azure, we only pay for the bandwidth and CPU that we need so we’re not over- or under-buying hardware or bandwidth capacity. Our services are also consistently fast or faster than before because delivery automatically scales with demand. It’s nice not having to worry about how many customers are using our services or how much content is being served.”
Boosts Agility and Accelerates the Development of New Services
Code and infrastructure are easier to replicate in the cloud, so Netgem can now onboard new clients and add new content faster. For example, last July, Videofutur added a new subscription video on demand service (SVOD) and catalog with a large number of movies. “We used our Azure Media Services ingest-encode-encrypt-publish workflow and processed 700 movies (and their trailers) in just 10 days,” says Crainic. “We couldn’t do that without Azure because we wouldn’t have been able to scale our infrastructure or get the staff we’d need fast enough to get the same results.”
By building its hybrid architecture on Azure, Netgem has also dramatically boosted its agility. “Our ultimate goal is to deliver content to people in their homes using the smallest footprint and the lowest cost possible,” Crainic says. “With Microsoft Azure and Azure Media Services, we now have the flexible platform we need to meet demand and also rapidly evolve our offerings as fast as the industry changes.” The company’s plans include delivering more content and services to more devices inside and outside of homes.
October 07, 2014
Improves Services for Operators
Netgem operators now have an easy solution for fine-tuning offerings and even troubleshooting STBs. Crainic explains, “By deploying the Device Management Service in Azure, we allow operators to focus on managing their services and their STBs, because they don’t have to worry about performance and scalability.”
Increases Efficiency and Simplicity
IT staff are saving time with the automation capabilities of Azure Media Services and Azure Cloud Services. Crainic says, “Our catch-up-service portal has been running on Microsoft Azure for almost one year. We monitor it, but it really runs on its own with no labor on our part.” Plus, staff can use the best tool for the job without adding complexity. “With Microsoft Azure, we can develop services with Linux tools and Visual Studio, and the components just talk to each other,” says Crainic. “It’s that simple.”

What TELCOS NEED: A NEW KIND OF TV SOLUTION (see Totalplay in Mexico with netflix, or EE TV)

JANUARY 14, 2016

Telcos Need A New Kind Of TV Solution (like TelcoTV)
That Acknowledges Low Content Margins

"...EE claimed it was the most advanced TV service the UK had seen, when it was launched..."

"...despite EE TV being free (and with the mobile and broadband prices well within the ‘normal’ range in the UK, it is genuinely free), this service has been hailed for its quality..."

"...Thevenot was in charge of EE Broadband in the UK and is credited with launching EE TV for the fixed broadband and mobile operator – a service unveiled in October 2014. This has been widely acclaimed for its excellent user experience, with features that compare favourably against far bigger Pay TV operators. Sylvain transitioned his team of functional experts into Netgem TV PVX and they are running 'TV as a managed service' for EE, responsible for end-to-end ongoing product developments, content partnerships, marketing services and 24x7 television operations. Netgem views EE TV as a great example of what a future-facing IPTV service looks like and Thevenot expects more telcos to follow a similar path..."

"...Totalplay in Mexico also uses the TelcoTV platform to provide what is described as a comprehensive TV service for customers with complex behaviours yet low budgets. This service includes linear, VOD and OTT, among other things. Totalplay was one of the first Netgem customers to add Netflix (Elisa TV in Finland was another)."

Mon historique d’activation :

...winning OTT battle in Asia...(Viu platform vs netflix)

January 11th, 2016

Localisation and relevance key to winning OTT battle in Asia, says PCCW Media MD Janice Lee

"Localisation and relevance will be the key battleground for over-the-top service providers in the race for subscribers in Asia, the head of Hong Kong’s newly launched on-demand streaming content brand Viu has said.

"...Viu has attracted more than 500,000 downloads in less than three months after launching in its home market of Hong Kong. This reflects a “phenomenal response to the service,” Lee said.
After Singapore, the service is to launch next in Malaysia, Indonesia and India, and Lee revealed plans to introduce a bouquet of Japanese and Chinese shows to the platform as the next step in building its content arsenal.
Viu launches the week after Netflix announced it was to launch in 130 globally, including a number of key markets in Asia including entertainment hubs Korea and Japan. Netflix is on a hiring spree to market its service across the region and has hired a creative agency to produce content for its social media channels...."

The traditional TV model is changing, 2016... (EE TV, Netgem, Pay TV or Free-to-Air broadcasters)

(8 january 2016)
‘TV the Telco Way’
will be the Differentiator
for Mobile and Fixed Operators in 2016
1: THE MOBILE WILL BECOME THE PRIMARY SCREEN

2: CONTENT DISCOVERY ON THE USER’S TERMS WILL BE PARAMOUNT

3: BROADCASTERS MUST ESTABLISH NEW DISTRIBUTION CHANNELS TO REMAIN RELEVANT

4: TELCOTV WILL GAIN MOMENTUM OVER PAY TV MODELS

"(...)
With operators increasingly embracing TelcoTV-based solutions, consumers often get access to both models, making it more appealing for telecoms operators to invest and develop new hybrid solutions that reach the widest group of targetsacross Free and Premium content. While some are doing this already – EE for exampletelcos are still in their relative infancy in terms of market share in TV. This means that they need deliver a compelling mix of Free and Premium content: TelcoTV delivers this perfect mix offering the widest choice to customers across live and OTT On-Demand content.
The traditional TV model is changing, and now is the time for Telecoms operators to seize the opportunities available in order to differentiate themselves, and shape ‘TV the Telco way’ to develop new revenue streams and to ensure a successful 2016 and beyond."

Telstra T-Box / Bigpond: 2016 New Set Up Videos !

New!

December 2015

"The T-Box hasn't actually been replaced.

Telstra have released the Telstra TV, however it is different from the T-Box. It doesn't have Foxtel on T-Box and it is also not a Video Recorder... They identified that less people wanted the features of the T-Box and more wanted the features of devices like the Roku, Chromecast and Apple TV.... so Telstra partnered with Roku to make the Telstra TV as a streaming device.

In addition, the changes to the Foxtel pricing set up, reducing the base package from $49 to $25 really removed the price difference between Foxtel and Foxtel on T-Box, meaning that (on the bundles at least) for pretty much the same price you get full Foxtel with the iQ Boxes, meaning you can record all TV including the Foxtel shows, and access to a greater range of channels... with the features being greater the price point being pretty much the same I know there was a lot of people who migrated to the full Foxtel since...

All in all, I guess they just decided that it wasn't viable to have a new T-Box device with the market moving away from the features and benefits that it provided..."
