RépondreSupprimerWell, this is interesting. As Mark said, some of us remember Vodafone’s launch of Pay TV in the UK which got pulled in 2017 at a cost of millions. Now we have this hub which is intriguing as it’s another Freely device – but compared with Netgem’s puck its specification is much superior. Although Netgem is heavily involved the Vodafone hub uses Netgem’s cloud platform and not its hardware.
So who can use this hub?
It will connect only to Vodafone’s routers (fixed line and 5G FWA), and the best estimate I have is about 2.18–2.27 million in total (significant but not huge). In comparison the other Freely devices, the Netgem Pleio and Manhattan Aero, will work with any ISP.
But there’s more: Vodafone mobile users can get this TV service through a companion app, so what Vodafone is offering is a home + mobile converged platform whilst Pleio is just a home‑only puck.
So why re-enter the congested Pay TV market?
👉 The strategy is to boost fixed line and 5G FWA broadband by the new Vodafone TV service, i.e. broadband is what really matters. And the companion app is important: get the Vodafone mobile users hooked on the TV service and it’s a small step to getting a lot of them to subscribe to fixed line or 5G FWA broadband with the hub when their BT/Virgin Media/Sky subscription ends."
