Why Freeview Play boxes are still around ?! (better options on the market)

(24 octobre 2018)

"One issue with Amazon Fire, the Nvidia Shield or similar devices is the lack of access to over the air broadcasts, and in some cases such as the Shield, all the catch-up channels.

=> This is why Freeview Play boxes are still around and Netgem appears to have one of the better options on the market."

Netgem has recognised a need to declutter living spaces, especially if you live in a city, they realise most don;t have room for optical cables, HDMI cables and 4 boxes cluttering the room.  By combining an audio speaker and entertainment streaming box in one unit and addition of an Alexa supported voice control system aids minimalist design by reducing cables and excess accessories.

  • Freeview HD tuner.
  • On-demand and all catch-up streaming services from Freeview Play.
  • A dual-tweeter, dual-subwoofer soundbar aaaaand…
  • Amazon Alexa voice commands.
  • Number of boxes required: One
  • Netgem has delivered what modern British consumers demand, with the SoundBox HD delivering 70 Freeview channels. That includes the HD channels of all the main UK broadcasters, alongside all the Freeview Play catch-up programme feeds from the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, 5, and UKTV.
Netgem soundbar is intended to be placed on a flat surface in front of a TV rather than being clipped on or mounted. This allows the unit to be moved easily from room to room without any hassle.

In addition, modern viewing habits are catered for with unique one-click streaming of on-demand content from the likes of Amazon Prime Video, Rakuten, Hopster and Hayu, with more on-demand and catch-up services to be rolled out over the coming months. You can also access streaming music services such as Amazon Prime Music.

ZTE Wins Bulk of Rostelecom Access Network Upgrade Project
"(...)
With ZTE's Multi-Service Access Network (MSAN) product that adopts technologies such as VDSL, Rostelecom aims to build the first stage of the project.
The second stage will implement such high-speed technologies as G.vectoring and G.fast. The solutions for the second stage are now under tests in Rostelecom.
As new services based on the IP Internet grow rapidly, users have increasingly high demands for high-speed Web access. Rostelecom, the largest fixed network operator in Russia, urgently needs an integrated access platform that both inherits traditional services and provides high-speed broadband services. The platform improves speeds of the existing copper network and supports high-bandwidth for the new services, including 4K/8K video and potentially AR/VR.

Binge TV service in Estonia (Russia can follow similar TV model ?!)

(AUGUST 1, 2017)

Elisa, Starman launch smart TV service in Estonia -
Binge TV

Elisa and Estonia’s Starman have unveiled their first joint service.
Known as Binge, it is aimed at an estimated 200,000 households in Estonia who live outside cities and want the same smart TV viewing experience as cable TV customers.

Elisa's new Binge TV service will use Netgem's virtual set-top box features, providing a user interface bringing together local and international linear channels, seven-day catch-up and OTT services.
Binge TV also incorporates a network PVR (nPVR) for access to on-demand programming on several screens inside and outside the home, with a recommendation engine. The Netgem product integrates the Binge TV mobile app, which provides direct access to live and catch-up services.

Einari Kanerva, Head of Binge Business at Elisa, said as it expands into new countries, it wants to provide viewers with the best TV service possible, and a flexible way to expand it, once launched. By deploying Binge TV, Elisa can reach a growing population who want to watch TV footage wherever they are, and Netgem’s platform gives it "unique" flexibility to add more content and features over time.

 ***
Following on from the announcement of its first customers in the Middle East and Germany, Estonia is the third new television market Netgem is entering in 2017. Visit Netgem at IBC 2017, Stand 5.C70 at the RAI in Amsterdam 15-19 September to find out more about the deployment.

Commenting on the announcement,Sylvain Thevenot, MD at Netgem, added: “Consumer behaviour is changing, and operators need rapidly deployable and dynamic solutions that will enable them to maintain a competitive edge. Credits for Netgem, on EE TV Amazon Alexa voice control ! (vs Sky Q)

August 17, 2017

Credit should go to its partner Netgem for further differentiating EE TV over rivals. This latest move clearly underlines the importance of software in enhancing a TV service. Undoubtedly EE TV is a great option for consumers who are looking for a good set-top-box with access to a wide range of programming including free-to-air, on demand and a la carte purchases to premium content.”

The move makes the BT-owned outfit the first UK service provider to provide an Amazon Alexa skillset on its set-top boxes.

YouView, the broadcaster-supported platform that is used by BT and TalkTalk for their TV services, also announced in June that it was piloting Alexa voice control for its connected set-top boxes.
“EE continues to push the boundaries with its TV service. Given the fragmented nature of TV services today, we believe that voice will play a pivotal role in finding the programmes consumers want to watch. More importantly the support for Amazon Alexa goes one step further than Sky Q in supporting additional voice features,” said Paolo Pescatore, vice-president, multiplay and media, CCS Insight, commenting on the launch.

NEW: EE TV set-top boxes with Amazon Alexa voice commands (what Sky Soundbox doesn't do)

"You can now (17 AUGUST 2017), control EE TV set-top boxes with Amazon Alexa voice commands !!!"
